The Kingtons Book Published
Wiltshire VCH is pleased to announce the publication of The Kingtons: a History of the Ancient Parish of Kington St Michael with Kington Langley. The book, published by Hobnob Press in association with the Victoria County History of England and Kington St Michael Parish Council, has been researched and produced alongside our work on the Chippenham volume. We are especially grateful to VCH supporter Edward Buchan for making the inclusion of Kington Langley possible.
This book has earned the distinction of being the first VCH partnership publication after being reviewed by central VCH. While the traditional VCH big red books remain central to our work, the new VCH partnership publications offer greater flexibility for VCH publishing and provide opportunities for VCH County Trusts and local groups.
The Kingtons presents a thematic history, case studies, and in-depth examinations of village life in Kington St Michael and Kington Langley throughout the centuries. Readers will delve into the intricate details of these north Wiltshire communities, gaining insights into the lives of the villagers, their livelihoods, social interactions, and religious practices, as well as key events and histories of significant buildings. The text is enriched with over 100 illustrations from four centuries to the present day, including many previously unpublished 17th-century sketches and paintings by John Aubrey. While of particular interest to local residents, with its comprehensive approach and stories of named village people from the 12th to the 20th century at its core, this book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of rural communities, social history, and the evolution of village life.
The book priced at £14.95 was launched on 13 June at 7.30 at Kington St Michael village hall. It is available to purchase at Kington St Michael Community Shop and Hobnob Press.
